As preparation, read Dr. Brock’s book, co-authored with Rebecca Parker,
Proverbs of Ashes: Violence, Redemptive Suffering, and the Search for What Saves Us.


Rita Nakashima Brock

Rita Nakashima Brock is a Visiting Scholar at the Starr King School for the Ministry, Graduate Theological Union, Berkeley, CA. Before her arrival at Berkeley, she was a Fellow at Harvard Divinity School, Director of the Fellowship Program at the Radcliffe Institute for Advanced Study, and professor of religion and women’s studies at a number of colleges and universities.

In addition to Proverbs of Ashes, Dr. Brock has authored and co-authored a number of works including: Journeys By Heart: A Christology of Erotic Power, Casting Stones: Prostitution and Liberation in Asia, Guide to the Perplexing: A Survival Manual for Women in Religious Studies, and Setting the Table: Women in Theological Conversation.

Among her many contributions to her church, including serving on the General Board and Administrative Committees of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), Dr. Brock was the first Chair of the Common Global Ministries Board, a joint venture of the United Church of Christ and the Disciples of Christ. In 1993, she represented the National Council of Churches on an ecumenical, international, delegation to Guatemala and El Salvador to support the peace-making processes in both countries.

Dr. Brock has given lectures in Australia, New Zealand, England, Germany, Denmark, Hong Kong, Japan, and Canada, as well as across the United States. Her work continues to interweave religious questions with issues of justice in the U.S. and international contexts.

Directions

From the South on I-94, takeExit 70, follow signs to downtown.
From the North on HWY 53, take the Birch Street exit to downtown.

Key intersection is Lake Street and Farwell. 
For the church, go west on Lake, across the river to 4th Ave.
The Ramada is three blocks north of Lake on Farwell.

From the West on I-94 or South-West, find your way to North Claremont (Hwy 12)
and Menomonie St (just north of the Chippewa River).  East on Menomonie St.

Left at the sign for CarsonPark.
Drive through the park. That brings you out on Lake Street and to the church.
The church has a parking lot and there is ample parking on adjacent streets.
The parking lot at the Court House 2 blocks east is also available.
